I am Mike Baker and have been a member of Alton Lions Club (CIO) for nearly 20 years.
When I stopped travelling and working full-time I volunteered to help organise the Millennium celebrations in Alton. This involved finding more volunteers from the community and that brought me into contact with Alton Lions and although I had never heard of Lions they were the jolliest, most reliable and the most willing of the volunteer groups I came across.
I was keen to become involved in the community where my home was and through Lions have been able to fulfil that ambition. This involvement has enabled me to put something back and has included a whole raft of community service and fund raising activities. In the photo I am receiving Christmas cakes ready for sale at the November and December Craft Markets. In addition, I have been club President, Secretary, Public Relations and am currently club Treasurer and chairman of the local Zone that includes Alton, Petersfield, Woolmer Forest and Meon Valley. I help Lions clubs in the UK to become Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIO), as a club that raises more than £5000 from its members and the public must become a registered charity. This means that I am in contact with many Lions throughout England, helping them to put something back into their communities.
