Alton Lions and PCaSO Join Forces for Life-Saving Prostate Cancer Screening Event
The Alton Lions Club, in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO), has announced a community-wide PSA blood testing event aimed at early detection and awareness. The event is scheduled for Saturday, 21st March 2026, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Alton Community Centre on Amery Street.
With prostate cancer claiming one life every hour in the UK, the local charities are urging men between the ages of 40 and 80 to take advantage of this free service. While the testing is provided at no cost, donations are welcomed to help offset the expenses of the life-saving program.
Why Testing Matters
The PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test is a simple blood test taken from a vein in the arm. While it is not a direct diagnosis of cancer, it serves as a critical indicator of prostate health. High levels of PSA can signal potential issues that may require further medical investigation.
Experts and the event organizers recommend that:
Every man over 50 should know his PSA level.
Men over 40 with a family history of prostate cancer should consider testing early.
"Know your PSA, know where it's going," is the message from the organizers, highlighting the importance of tracking levels over time to spot trends or sudden changes.
